OVER 40 WORKOUT

The Warm Up

Fifteen years ago we used to jump right into an intense workout and hoist hundreds of pounds without the slightest warm up. Youth can afford to make such mistakes, but at over 40 such practices can be downright dangerous.

Before you start your weight lifting workout do 10-15 minutes of brisk walking (running) on the treadmill, stationary bike or any aerobic machine to get your metabolism up, get blood into your muscles and increase the viscosity of your joints.

Start Light Weights

When you start your weightlifting routine and at the beggining of each lift, do a few light repetitions with about half the weight you are shooting for that day. Again, this is geared to warm up your muscles and increase viscosity to your joints based upon each particular range of motion associated with the exercise.

Wear and Tear

As we get older, we require more recovery time after intensive workouts. Therefore, the need to maximize results with a minimum of time invested is of paramount importance. As intensity of your workouts increases you WILL need more time to recover. This is good news to everyone except the exercise addict.

Quality not Quantity

The truth is you can achieve your optimum muscularity by working out with precisely engineered workouts that contain clear goals. But each workout must build on the previous one with progressive intensity each time you hit the gym. Intensity is measured by the amount of work done per unit time. Thus, you will actually achieve better results in less time if you perform higher intensity exercises per muscle group.

Muscle equals Youth

Age can't be measured by the calendar alone. The amount of muscle your body contains is one of the principle "bio-markers" of aging. The more muscle you have the younger you are. Another bio-marker is bone density. And guess what, the number one method for more bone density is weight bearing exercise.

Remember more intensity in your workouts translates to less wear and tear on your body, fewer workouts and some better healthier results.
